Lord of the Rings Fans, Rejoice! Epic Anime Prequel The War of the Rohirrim Hits Max SOON!

Middle-earth fans, get ready! The latest chapter in the Lord of the Rings saga, The War of the Rohirrim, is riding onto Max for its global streaming debut on February 28. And if you prefer the traditional big-screen feel (at home), it will also air on HBO on March 1 at 8 PM ET.
This feature-length anime adventure from New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Animation brings J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendary world back to life, diving into one of the most dramatic battles in Rohan’s history.

A Tale of Kings, Betrayal, and War
Set 183 years before Frodo’s fateful journey in The Lord of the Rings, The War of the Rohirrim tells the story of Helm Hammerhand, the fearless King of Rohan. When a cunning and vengeful Dunlending lord, Wulf, launches a surprise attack, Helm and his people are forced into a desperate final stand at the mighty Hornburg fortress—later known as Helm’s Deep.
As the conflict rages, Helm’s daughter, Héra, must rise to the occasion, proving herself as a leader in a war that threatens to wipe out her people.
A Star-Studded Cast & Legendary Creators
Directed by Kenji Kamiyama (Blade Runner: Black Lotus, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex), the film boasts an impressive voice cast, including:
- Brian Cox (Succession) as King Helm Hammerhand
- Gaia Wise (A Walk in the Woods) as Héra

Behind the scenes, Philippa Boyens, an Oscar-winning writer from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, serves as producer. She’s joined by executive producers Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Sam Register, ensuring this anime prequel stays true to Tolkien’s vision.
