In a joint press conference held with the FMX – Film and Media Exchange and the co-production market Animation Production Days, the Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film (ITFS) organizers, under the new direction of Heike Mozer and Annegret Richter, have revealed significant changes and exciting additions to the upcoming 2024 edition.

Scheduled to run from April 23rd to April 28th, this year’s festival promises a fresh perspective and a revamped experience for filmmakers, audiences, and the press alike. The festival, known as “the festival of short distances,” will now boast a new central location in the heart of the city, facilitating easier access for all attendees.

One of the key highlights of the festival will be the introduction of the “Insights” concept, featuring talks, panels, masterclasses, and workshops primarily hosted in the festival center. Additionally, a dedicated Filmmakers Lounge will serve as a hub for networking and discussions, offering audiences a chance to interact with filmmakers personally.

A significant addition to the festival lineup is the Stuttgart Animated Week, a collaborative effort with FMX and APD, showcasing a diverse range of events leading up to the grand opening. Notable events include a masterclass with Ebele Okoye focusing on women in African animation and a special series screening of “Fritzi Und Sophie,” a German historical drama set to premiere on ARD and Kika.

Artistic director Annegret Richter emphasized the festival’s commitment to showcasing a diverse array of animation styles and themes. With over 500 films from 34 countries, the festival will spotlight traditional animation techniques alongside themes of identity, home, and self-reflection.

Richter also stressed the importance of promoting German animation on the global stage, with a dedicated focus on German filmmakers and their works. This year’s festival will feature the world premiere of “Fritzi Und Sophie,” highlighting the collaborative efforts between ITFS, APD, and FMX.

In addition to celebrating German animation, the festival will roll out the green carpet for Ireland, showcasing the country’s vibrant animation scene. Supported by Zeitgeist Irland 24 and Animation Ireland, the special focus on Ireland aims to spotlight the country’s emerging talents and unique storytelling.

As anticipation builds for the 2024 edition of the Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film, audiences can expect a dynamic program celebrating creativity, innovation, and cultural exchange in the world of animation.
