Netflix’s recent live-action adaptation of the popular manga “Yu Yu Hakusho” has broken records, emerging as the most widely embraced Japanese series globally. Since its worldwide release on December 14, 2023, the series has captivated audiences worldwide within its first week.

The highly anticipated show immediately debuted at the top spot on Netflix’s weekly global non-English TV list, amassing a staggering 7.7 million views. Simultaneously, it claimed the second position in both English and non-English categories, solidifying its position as the most successful debut of a Japanese series to date. Impressively, it ranked in the Top 10 in 92 countries and regions, including Japan, the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Brazil, India, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.

During the series premiere, a live-streamed event attracted an audience of 14,000 viewers concurrently. By December 19, the total views surpassed four million, establishing it as the most-watched live event in the history of Netflix Japan.

Yu Yu Hakusho” is an adaptation of Yoshihiro Togashi’s manga, which was originally published under Shueisha Jump Comics. Under the direction of Sho Tsukikawa and with Tatsuro Mishima as the screenwriter, the Netflix rendition showcases a talented ensemble including Takumi Kitamura, Jun Shison, Kanata Hongo, Shuhei Uesugi, Sei Shiraishi, Kotone Furukawa, Ai Mikami, Hiroya Shimizu, Keita Machida, Meiko Kaji, Kenichi Takitoh, Goro Inagaki, and Go Ayano

Behind the scenes, Ryo Sakaguchi served as the VFX supervisor at Scanline VFX, with Kaata Sakamoto as the executive producer at Netflix and Akira Morii as the producer in association with THE SEVEN. Netflix’s production of the series involved collaboration with ROBOT.
