The Fredrikstad Animation Festival is marking its 30th year by celebrating one of its most influential figures, Estonian animator Priit Pärn. A key figure in the festival’s history, Pärn was the first to win the festival’s Grand Prix in 1996 and has been named the Guest of Honor for 2024. His extensive contributions to the Nordic and Baltic animation community, both as a filmmaker and educator, have made him an inspirational figure across the region.

The festival, scheduled for October 24-27 in the historic fortress city of Fredrikstad, will recognize Pärn’s remarkable career by bestowing upon him the Lifetime Achievement Award. The event will feature a comprehensive program dedicated to his over 50-year career, which has profoundly influenced the animation industry.

Pärn’s journey began in 1974 as a visual concept designer for the renowned animator Rein Raamat. He later became associated with the Joonisfilm studio in the 1970s, establishing himself as a prominent figure in Estonia’s film industry. Known for his dark humor, surrealism, and distinctive graphic style, Pärn’s most notable works include Triangle (1984), Breakfast on the Grass (1987), Hotel E (1992), and Night of the Carrots (1998). His films have achieved significant success at international festivals, earning him a reputation as one of the foremost animators in Europe.

Beyond his filmmaking, Pärn has been a respected mentor and educator, shaping the next generation of animators at art academies in Finland, Estonia, and 15 other countries, including Norway, Japan, France, and the United States. His leadership in establishing animation programs at the Estonian Academy of Arts and Turku in Finland has led to over 140 awards for films under his supervision.

With a career that spans from the Soviet era to modern-day Estonia, Pärn has directed, written, and served as artistic director for 18 animated films, and his work has been showcased in more than 50 solo exhibitions worldwide. He has received numerous accolades, including nine lifetime achievement awards from prestigious organizations such as ASIFA and international film festivals in Poland, Croatia, and Spain.

At this year’s festival, Pärn’s latest film Luna Rossa, co-directed with his wife, Belarusian-Estonian animator Olga Pärn, will be the opening film on October 24. On October 26, Pärn will also deliver a talk, and throughout the festival, an exhibition featuring prints by Olga and Priit Pärn will be on display in the foyer of the Fredrikstad cinema.
