“11 Game-Changing Animation Tips from DreamWorks Animator Adrien Liv You Need to Know!”
My Image
DreamWorks animator Adrien Liv, whose impressive resume includes Despicable Me, Paddington 2, and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, has some golden nuggets of wisdom for anyone looking to make it in the animation industry. From navigating the ups and downs of the business to finding joy in your work, here are 11 essential tips from the seasoned pro himself!
1. Get Your Foot in the Door (and Keep It There)
Breaking into the animation industry often starts with proactive online visibility. Platforms like LinkedIn, Instagram, and Vimeo are essential for showcasing your work. Adrien recommends reaching out to professionals you admire on LinkedIn—don’t hesitate to message someone you saw in the credits of a project you loved. After all, we’re all in this creative world together. Be persistent, and remember: it’s about being at the right place at the right time.
2. Find Time to Focus (and Then Protect It)
As an animator, concentration is key. Liv recommends eliminating distractions by setting a “focus time” status on Gmail or using noise-canceling headphones. It’s not just about working harder—it’s about working smarter. Animation requires deep focus, and a few hours of uninterrupted work can make all the difference.
3. Breaks Are Your Best Friend
Long hours at the desk can take a toll on both your body and creativity. Liv swears by taking regular breaks—walking around, hydrating, and looking at the horizon to rest your eyes. You’ll be amazed how stepping away for a few minutes can give you fresh perspective on your work and leave you feeling recharged.
4. Invest in Your Long-Term Health
Longevity in animation means taking care of your body. Ergonomics are crucial, and Liv learned this the hard way after dealing with wrist and back pain. Whether it’s a vertical mouse, a Wacom tablet, or a comfortable chair and standing desk, investing in the right tools for your workspace will help you avoid physical burnout in the long run.
5. Develop Your Skills (Both Artistic and Technical)
As technology evolves, so should your skills. Liv stresses the importance of mastering both the artistic and technical aspects of animation. Learning things like parenting, baking, and layer management will save you time in the long run. Don’t get too caught up in the tools themselves, though—great ideas always trump fancy tech.
6. Find Your “Pod Buddies”
The power of feedback cannot be underestimated. Liv suggests finding a group of trusted colleagues, or “pod buddies,” to share your work with. Even in remote settings, having a sounding board for your ideas can be invaluable. Remember: if two people give similar feedback, it’s time to listen!
7. Choose Your School (or Teacher) Wisely
For aspiring animators, Liv recommends focusing on the quality of the teacher rather than the prestige of the school. Many successful animators have found their mentors online, where teachers actively work in the industry and can provide real-world advice. So, skip the massive debt and invest in a teacher who can guide you to success.
8. It’s Okay to Doubt Yourself
Every animator has their moments of self-doubt. Liv reassures us that it’s natural to question yourself, especially during crunch time. The key is not to let those doubts paralyze you. Trust the process, stay focused on building a good workflow, and remember that you’re more than just your last shot.
9. Professionalism Goes Beyond the Work Itself
Being a problem solver is just as important as being a talented animator. Liv encourages animators to think ahead, collaborate with colleagues, and show initiative. It’s all about treating others how you’d like to be treated—taking ownership of your work and offering solutions, not just identifying problems.
10. Be Ready for the Cycles (and Thrive During Downturns)
Animation is a cyclical industry, and layoffs are inevitable. Liv advises being financially responsible so you can weather the lean periods. But don’t just survive—use the downtime to grow. Learn new skills, work on personal projects, or dive into new tools like Blender or Unreal Fellowship. Every down period can be an opportunity for growth.
11. Never Forget the Fun
At the end of the day, animation is about creativity, passion, and fun. Liv reminds us that when you enjoy what you’re doing, it shows on the screen. Try to be your own audience, create what excites you, and let your enthusiasm shine through your work.
