The 52nd Annie Awards: Surprises, Stars, and the Biggest Night in Animation You Can’t Miss!

Lights, camera, animation! It’s that time of year again when the animation industry dons its finest and gathers for the prestigious Annie Awards—the ultimate celebration of the art, talent, and passion behind animated films, TV shows, and shorts. As we gear up for the 52nd edition of the Annie Awards, set to dazzle at UCLA’s Royce Hall on February 8, 2025, excitement is at an all-time high.

Founded in 1972 by the legendary June Foray, the Annie Awards have grown into animation’s equivalent of the Oscars, a night where animators, directors, voice actors, and creatives get their well-deserved moment in the spotlight. But what makes this year’s event extra special? Let’s take a sneak peek!

New Leadership, Same Passion

Aubry Mintz, ASIFA-Hollywood’s new executive director, is at the helm of the event for the first time, and his enthusiasm is contagious. Having served on ASIFA-Hollywood’s board for over a decade, Mintz brings a fresh perspective and deep appreciation for animation. “I’ve been meeting incredible artists and learning so much about the industry,” he shares. “Animation is a powerful medium, and I love seeing how different creatives bring their unique visions to life.”

Challenges and Triumphs in 2025

It’s no secret that 2025 has been a rollercoaster year for animation. From industry-wide layoffs to union negotiations and even the devastating California wildfires, the community has faced its share of hardships. However, ASIFA-Hollywood is stepping up in a big way.

“We’ve approved a fundraising initiative to support those affected by the fires,” Mintz reveals. “Animation is a close-knit family, and when one of us struggles, we all feel it. This year’s Annie Awards will not just celebrate achievements but also remind us of the strength of our community.”

More Than Just an Awards Show

While Hollywood’s major award shows often relegate animation to a single category, the Annie Awards shine a light on every facet of the craft. With 32 categories spanning everything from storyboarding to voice acting, the ceremony ensures that every department gets its well-earned moment of recognition.

“Every animated project is a team effort,” Mintz explains. “There are so many talented individuals who contribute to a film or series, and the Annies allow us to honor them properly.”

This year’s nominations have brought an exciting mix of big-budget blockbusters and indie gems, proving once again that animation is a diverse and ever-evolving art form.

Surprises in Store!

What’s an award show without a few surprises? Mintz teases that a major announcement will be made during the event. While details are hush-hush, he hints that ASIFA-Hollywood is embarking on a brand-new initiative that will greatly impact animation artists.

And of course, the red carpet will be filled with some of the biggest names in the industry. Think of it as the “Animation Prom”, where animators, directors, and voice actors reunite, share laughs, and celebrate their shared love for storytelling.

Looking to the Future

With so many challenges facing the industry, ASIFA-Hollywood is committed to building a stronger foundation for animators. Beyond the Annies, they’re actively working on:
✅ Scholarships and grants for animation students and educators.
✅ Film preservation projects to restore and protect historical animated works.
✅ Support for open-source animation software, making tools more accessible.
✅ Financial aid programs for animators facing hardships.

Mintz sums it up best: “Animation isn’t just an industry; it’s a community. As we navigate these challenges together, we’ll continue to uplift and celebrate each other.”

The Countdown Begins!

With just days to go, anticipation for the 52nd Annie Awards is building. Whether you’re a die-hard animation fan or an industry insider, this year’s event promises to be a night to remember—filled with laughter, inspiration, and, of course, plenty of animated magic.

So, grab your popcorn and get ready to celebrate the best of the best in animation. The Annie Awards are about to roll out the red carpet, and we can’t wait to see who takes home the top honors!
