Warner Bros./New Line has stepped back from distributing Sony Pictures Animation’s adult animated comedy “Fixed,” directed and written by the acclaimed Genndy Tartakovsky, Variety reports. The distribution rights have reverted to Sony Pictures Animation, which is now exploring new avenues for the film’s release.

The decision by Warner Bros. Discovery to part ways with a Tartakovsky project is surprising, given his deep connection with the company. Tartakovsky, a key figure in the early and ongoing success of Cartoon Network, is best known for creating iconic series like “Dexter’s Laboratory,” “Samurai Jack,” “Star Wars: Clone Wars,” and “Primal,” as well as producing “The Powerpuff Girls.” In 2022, Tartakovsky inked an exclusive, multi-year overall deal with Cartoon Network Studios and Warner Bros. Animation, solidifying his status as a major creative force.

Tartakovsky has also made significant contributions to Sony, with the first three “Hotel Transylvania” films, which he directed, collectively grossing $1.38 billion globally.

“Fixed” centers on Bull, a bloodhound who embarks on a bucket list-style adventure after learning that he is scheduled to be neutered. The film features a star-studded voice cast, including Adam Devine as Bull, Idris Elba, Kathryn Hahn, Bobby Moynihan, Fred Armisen, Beck Bennett, Michaelle Bureau, and River Gallo. Michelle Murdocca, who worked with Tartakovsky on “Hotel Transylvania,” returns as the producer.

While “Fixed” may target a more niche audience compared to Tartakovsky’s family-friendly monster films, the film is expected to attract interest, whether it debuts in theaters or on a streaming platform.

Netflix is a potential contender for the film’s distribution, having previously partnered with Sony Pictures Animation for releases like “Vivo,” “Wish Dragon,” and the Oscar-nominated “The Mitchells vs. The Machines.”
