Pixar Animation Studios has unveiled RenderMan version 26, a significant advancement in the company’s core rendering technology. This latest release introduces groundbreaking features aimed at advancing rendering capabilities and streamlining workflows for artists.

Among the key highlights of RenderMan 26 is the significant advancement in RenderMan XPU™. The update enhances light support, camera controls, and adaptive sampling capabilities, resulting in accelerated rendering and improved interactivity, thus empowering artists to bring their visions to life like never before.

One of the most anticipated features is the introduction of an interactive version of the machine learning denoiser. This revolutionary addition to rendering workflows reduces iteration times and maintains image quality during interactive sessions, revolutionizing the rendering experience for artists.

Additionally, core improvements such as faster instancing and texture read parallelism ensure optimal performance across various rendering scenarios. RenderMan’s Stylized Looks™ toolset also receives significant enhancements, providing artists with enhanced creative control and a more intuitive user experience.

Oliver Meiseberg, RenderMan Vice President at Pixar Animation Studios, expressed excitement about the release, stating, “We’re thrilled to introduce the latest version of RenderMan XPU! It’s going to revolutionize the experience of final frame rendering for many new use cases.”

Renee Tam, Global Technology Supervisor at Pixar Animation Studios, shared insights into the impact of the Interactive Denoiser, stating, “Since the Interactive Denoiser has been rolled out in production, most of our lighters have turned it on by default, and some say they’ll never go back again and they can’t live without this.”

James Lojo, Technical Director at Pixar Animation Studios, echoed similar sentiments, praising the Interactive Denoiser as a “lifesaver” and emphasizing its importance in achieving quality renders.

With RenderMan version 26, Pixar reaffirms its commitment to innovation and excellence in rendering technology, empowering artists and studios to bring their creative visions to life with unparalleled efficiency and quality.
