In a groundbreaking move, director Wes Ball has announced plans for a unique DVD release of “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” offering viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the raw actor performances without visual effects (VFX). This innovative approach aims to showcase the meticulous craft behind bringing the apes to life on screen.

Ball revealed his plans during an interview with Ape Nation, expressing his enthusiasm for offering audiences a glimpse into the filmmaking process. The DVD will feature the entire movie alongside the raw dailies, providing viewers with a side-by-side comparison of the final cut and the unaltered performances.

“We’re working on a version where you’ll be able to watch the movie with the raw dailies,” Ball explained. “You can see how close they get, what they do, and how they stitch everything together. It’s amazing, and you can just sit there and enjoy it.”

Accompanying the raw footage will be commentary from Erik Winquist, the VFX supervisor, offering further insight into the intricate process of integrating CG characters with live-action performances. This feature promises to be a first for fans of the franchise, offering a deeper appreciation for the artistry involved in creating believable ape characters.

The decision to release this unique version of the film reflects a growing interest among audiences in understanding the intricacies of filmmaking, particularly in the realm of visual effects. By stripping away the CGI enhancements, viewers will have the opportunity to witness the nuanced expressions and performances of the actors behind the ape characters.

For both seasoned cinephiles and casual moviegoers alike, the upcoming DVD release of “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” promises to deliver a truly immersive and enlightening viewing experience. Scheduled for release following the theatrical debut on May 10, 2024, this innovative offering is set to redefine how audiences engage with blockbuster films.
