Netflix has officially acquired the global streaming rights to I Am Frankelda (Spanish: Soy Frankelda), the acclaimed stop-motion animated feature from Mexican filmmakers Arturo and Roy Ambriz. The film — slated for a 2026 worldwide premiere on the platform — marks a major milestone for Mexican animation.

Produced by the brothers’ Mexico City-based studio Cinema Fantasma, I Am Frankelda is recognized as the first feature-length stop-motion film produced entirely in Mexico. The movie debuted at international festivals and has already earned a nomination for Best Independent Feature Film at the 53rd Annie Awards — a prestigious honor in the animation industry.

The story follows Frankelda, a gifted writer in 19th-century Mexico whose imaginative horror tales blur the lines between fiction and reality as she faces the enigmatic creatures born from her own inner world.

Acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, known for his work on Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, served as a creative guide on the project and described the film as “a landmark in Mexican stop-motion animation.”

With Netflix’s acquisition, I Am Frankelda will reach audiences worldwide, bringing a new level of global exposure to Mexican stop-motion storytelling.
