After the success of their NBA parody series Game of Zones, animators Adam and Craig Malamut are back with Universal Basic Guys, a new addition to Fox’s Animation Domination lineup. The quirky show follows two brothers, Mark and Hank Hoagies, who find themselves unemployed after the closure of a hot dog factory but receive universal basic income — leaving them with plenty of free time and absurd adventures.

The idea for the show emerged four years ago when the Malamuts, fresh off Game of Zones, were looking for their next project. Inspired by Andrew Yang’s presidential campaign and his advocacy for universal basic income, they developed the concept of Universal Basic Guys. “We wanted to figure out what felt fresh,” said Craig Malamut.

Mark Hoagies, voiced by Adam Malamut, is characterized by “infinite optimism and self-delusion,” while Hank, inspired by Craig’s younger self, provides a more grounded contrast. Their dynamic reflects the Malamuts’ real-life sibling relationship.

The duo’s DIY approach, honed during their Game of Zones days, is evident in the making of Universal Basic Guys. From self-taught animation techniques to video-recording their own performances as reference material, the Malamuts maintain their hands-on process. “Our whole animation process started as us just figuring it out,” said Adam. “We dove in head first without knowing how hard it would be to animate even a short cartoon.”

Despite their unconventional methods, the Malamuts have found success, with Universal Basic Guys already greenlit for a second season. “We’ve always had a good partnership,” said Adam. “I start things, and Craig makes sure they’re finished.”

With Fred Armisen and Kate Flannery joining the cast and the oddball world of Glantontown coming to life, Universal Basic Guys promises to bring the Malamuts’ unique comedic touch to Sunday night TV for seasons to come.
