A newly published Animation & AI Report from industry analytics leader Luminate Intelligence evaluates how generative AI is potentially reshaping the animation, VFX, and gaming industries. It highlights both the promise of AI in speeding up production and the rising concerns over creative integrity and job security.

Industry Shockwaves

The report captures the polarized sentiment in the industry—while executives tout generative AI as “revolutionary,” likening its impact to the industry upheaval when Pixar popularized 3D animation, many traditional artists view it as “dirty technology”—an exploitative force built on scraped labor and posing risks to employment and artistry.

Roles Most at Risk

Luminate’s key findings reveal:

  • Concept & storyboard artists—55% anticipate significant displacement
  • VFX artists—50% foresee potential impact from AI tools
  • Game developers—43% expect disruption in the near future
These projections are based on assessments from animation professionals over a two-year horizon.

Audience & Adoption Trends

  • Nearly half (46%) of viewers are uneasy with AI recreating real actors, versus only 30% discomfort around AI-generated animation illustrations.
  • While major studios are exploring AI R&D, most are cautious about using it in client projects due to legal and copyright vulnerabilities.

Additional insights point to production slowdowns: U.S. animated series commissions dropped from 225 in 2021 to just 71 in the first half of 2025—though adult animation remains resilient with 40+ annual orders since 2022.

Why This Matters for AVGC & Creative Workforces

Integrity vs. Efficiency TensionAI may deliver faster production, but at the cost of craftsmanship and fair labor.
Need for Ethical AI UseStudios increasingly prioritize “ethical data”—licensed or public-domain sources.
Opportunity to Reimagine PipelinesAI could enable more experimental content, if applied with care and collaboration.
