Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation have initiated early discussions to develop a sequel to the wildly successful animated musical KPop Demon Hunters — a film that recently rewrote Netflix records as the most-watched title of all time, amassing over 236 million views.
Directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, KPop Demon Hunters also made a notable mark with its sing-along theatrical release, grossing approximately $19.2 million in North American cinemas.
While the sequel is not yet confirmed, creative leads including Kang have suggested it could shift focus from lead singer Rumi to fellow group members Zoey or Mira, whose backstories were intentionally left open in the original. Elizabeth Kang noted there’s “a lot of questions that are left unanswered … maybe that can be shown some other time.”
Given that Sony developed the film and Netflix holds distribution rights per their 2021 deal (which included a $100M budget and $25M upfront to Sony), any sequel will require joint agreement from both entities.
