Kickstarter’s Biggest Animated Success Stories of 2024—You Won’t Believe These Numbers!

Crowdfunding has become a powerhouse for independent creators, and Kickstarter remains at the forefront of this movement. With over 35,000 projects launched in 2024 alone, the platform continues to shape the future of film and animation. The latest Kickstarter Creative Download offers a deep dive into the trends driving this explosive growth, revealing surprising insights into what backers are supporting—and what’s next for animation crowdfunding.

The Big Numbers: Kickstarter in 2024

The numbers from 2024 are staggering:

  • 35,512 projects launched on Kickstarter.
  • $706 million+ in total pledges for successfully funded campaigns.
  • $138,815—the highest amount pledged by a single backer across 111 projects.
  • $116.32—the average pledge amount (a 5% increase from 2023).
  • 2,053—the record for most projects backed by a single person ($28,523 total).

And what were people searching for the most? Surprisingly, the top search terms weren’t film-related at all—they included watches, Tarot, dice, keyboard, and coffee. Clearly, niche interests continue to thrive on Kickstarter.

Animation’s Rising Star in Crowdfunding

Animation has been one of the biggest success stories on Kickstarter, fueled by passionate communities eager to support independent creators. With $5 million in pledges, animation ranked second among all film subcategories, trailing only documentaries.

Key Trends in Animation Crowdfunding:

  • Fans are driving ambitious, high-budget projects, mirroring the enthusiasm seen in tabletop games and comics.
  • Animated campaigns are growing in scale, often exceeding their original funding goals.
  • Creators are leveraging crowdfunding not just for funding, but to involve backers in the creative journey.

Top-Funded Animation Project of 2024: Animating Cradle

The biggest animation success story of the year was Animating Cradle: Bestselling Fantasy Novels Come to Life! by author Will Wight. This campaign shattered expectations, raising $1,275,446 from 8,224 backers.

Wight, along with Hidden Gnome Publishing, turned to Kickstarter to bring his beloved Cradle book series to life through animation. Unlike traditional adaptations, this project was independently funded, ensuring creative control stayed with the original team and its fanbase. The campaign wasn’t just about money—it was about maintaining the spirit of self-publishing and directly involving fans in the process.

The first look at Cradle’s animation, produced by Jay Oliva’s Lex+Otis Studios, was unveiled at San Diego Comic-Con 2024, giving fans a taste of what’s to come.

Film & Animation Insights: Who’s Backing What?

Kickstarter’s 2024 data also revealed key insights about film and animation backers:

  • 24% of successful film projects were short films.
  • Most pledges in the film category came from major creative hubs like New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, London, and Chicago.
  • The top-funded short film was Nadine – A Golden Era by Tasha Ann Ladwig, raising $61,246 from 425 backers.

Set in 1956, Nadine explores the struggles of a Hollywood actress navigating the rigid studio system. It’s a poignant tale of ambition, fame, and personal sacrifice—themes that clearly resonated with backers.

What’s Next for Animation Crowdfunding in 2025?

With animation campaigns growing in both scale and ambition, Kickstarter’s 2025 forecast predicts even bigger success stories. Independent creators are proving that they don’t need traditional studios to bring their visions to life—just a dedicated community willing to support them.

If this year’s trends are any indication, expect even more record-breaking campaigns, innovative storytelling approaches, and new ways for fans to get involved. Whether you’re an animator looking to fund your next project or a fan eager to support original content, Kickstarter is proving to be the place where animation dreams become reality.

So, are you ready to back the next big animated hit?
