Jam & Tea Studios, a new gaming startup founded by industry veterans from Riot Games, Wizards of the Coast, and Magic: The Gathering, is set to revolutionize how players interact with non-playable characters (NPCs) through the use of generative AI. The company recently announced its debut game, Retail Mage, which will leverage AI to enhance gameplay mechanics, content generation, dialogue, and item creation.

Traditionally, NPCs in video games have been driven by scripted dialogues, often resulting in repetitive and predictable interactions. However, Retail Mage aims to break this mold by allowing players to engage in more dynamic and personalized conversations with AI-powered NPCs. This innovation opens up a wide array of potential player experiences, offering a more immersive and unpredictable gaming environment.

In Retail Mage, players assume the role of a wizard working as a salesperson in a magical furniture store, with the primary goal of earning five-star customer reviews. The game, however, provides the freedom for players to decide whether to diligently assist customers or indulge in chaos. With AI-driven NPCs acting as customers, players can type responses and direct interactions in real-time, leading to countless unique outcomes.

Co-founder and Chief Creative Officer M. Yichao, previously a narrative designer for Guild Wars 2 and League of Legends, emphasized the importance of maintaining a balance between AI technology and human creativity. “AI will generate dialogue and enable endless conversations with characters, but it’s the creative vision that will infuse these interactions with meaning, depth, and emotional resonance,” Yichao explained.

Despite the groundbreaking nature of this AI-driven approach, there are challenges to consider. Generative AI can sometimes produce unpredictable or incorrect responses, potentially leading to frustrating gameplay experiences. To address this, Jam & Tea is fine-tuning their AI models and incorporating player feedback to continuously improve NPC behavior.

The game also features innovative mechanics beyond dialogue generation. Players can interact with objects in the game world and even create new items by stating their intentions. While some of these creations may not have physical representations in the game, the system recognizes and records player actions, adding them to the inventory.

Retail Mage is set to launch this fall, with a price of $15 and additional game packs available for purchase. Initially, the game will be released on PC, with plans for cross-platform compatibility in the future. The company is also working on a more ambitious project, currently dubbed “Project Emily,” which will showcase more advanced environments and storylines.

Jam & Tea recently secured $3.15 million in seed funding from London Venture Partners, with additional support from Sisu Game Ventures and 1Up Ventures. The studio is gearing up for another funding round later this year, as it aims to expand its team and further develop its AI-powered gaming technology.
