In a notable showcase of India’s rich cultural tapestry, an upcoming animation film titled “Heirloom” is set to take center stage at the prestigious Cannes Film Market. Developed by Kolkata-born filmmaker Upamanyu Bhattacharyya, the project delves into the centuries-old textile traditions of Ahmedabad, a city renowned as the “Manchester of East” for its historical significance in the textile industry.

Selected as one of five projects in development by the Hong Kong – Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF) for its HAF Goes to Cannes initiative, “Heirloom” embarks on a journey to revive and celebrate Ahmedabad’s fabled handloom heritage. Against the backdrop of tradition versus modernity, the film unfolds as a period drama set in the 1960s, narrating the story of a young couple whose lives are transformed upon stumbling upon a tapestry chronicling their family history.

The narrative intricately weaves together themes of nostalgia, familial conflict, and the evolving landscape of Ahmedabad’s textile industry. Utilizing a blend of raw 2D animation and traditional fabric techniques like stop-motion embroidery and patchwork, “Heirloom” promises to offer a visually captivating portrayal of the city’s cultural ethos.

Director Upamanyu Bhattacharyya, an alumnus of the National Institute of Design (NID) in Ahmedabad, draws inspiration from his personal experiences and artistic exploration of the city. With meticulous attention to detail, Bhattacharyya crafts a narrative that not only pays homage to Ahmedabad’s vibrant past but also reflects on its dynamic present.

Supported by a grant from HAF and bolstered by the success of his previous works, Bhattacharyya and his team are gearing up for the production phase of “Heirloom.” The film’s participation in the Animation Day at Marché du Film last year laid the groundwork for potential collaborations and distribution opportunities, setting the stage for its anticipated debut on the global cinematic platform.

“Heirloom” follows in the footsteps of acclaimed Indian films like “Village Rockstars” by Rima Das, which garnered international acclaim following its pitch at the Cannes film market. As “Heirloom” prepares to make its mark on the world stage, it not only shines a spotlight on Ahmedabad’s heritage but also reaffirms India’s growing presence in the realm of animation filmmaking.
