India’s Leading Post-Production Studio, FutureWorks, Redefines VFX Standards in Netflix Productions

In the ever-evolving landscape of cinematic storytelling, perfecting certain scenes remains a persistent challenge. FutureWorks, a pioneering post-production studio based in India, recently encountered this predicament head-on while tasked with delivering high-profile driving dialogue scenes for a Netflix project.

Amidst the seasoned expertise of VFX professionals, specific scenes continue to pose intricate hurdles despite ample resources. The integration of computer-generated entities interacting within scenes, alongside driving dialogue sequences, presents notable complexities. This challenge was vividly highlighted in a fleeting yet glaring green-screen moment in the Earth-bound sequences of the acclaimed film “Interstellar.” Despite its celebrated visual effects, this instance underscored the inherent difficulties in crafting convincing driving dialogue scenes.

The traditional method of utilizing green screens and shooting multiple camera angles, requiring separate plates for each, presented persistent challenges. This approach often led to inconsistencies between angles, unrealistic reflections, and an intensive workload during filming.

Gouri Shankar, VFX Supervisor at FutureWorks, noted, “This workflow has inherent challenges, including potential inconsistencies between angles, unrealistic reflections, and a lot of extra work on set.” Fueled by the desire to surpass these limitations and deliver superior results, FutureWorks embarked on an ambitious quest to revolutionize their approach.

Their pursuit led to the development of a groundbreaking prototype—a bespoke setup meticulously designed to address these challenges. Unconstrained by off-the-shelf solutions, the team conceptualized and meticulously constructed a unique rig tailored precisely to their requirements.

Central to their innovation was the determination of the necessary overlap between shots to ensure a seamless, natural field of view, regardless of the selected portion from the 360-degree plate. Shankar detailed their process, stating, “Our team analyzed footage and utilized Unreal Engine to replicate these ideas in a virtual world, continually testing and refining the rig.” This meticulous approach instilled confidence for the physical construction of the rig.

Crafted with precision, the prototype involved a wooden frame housing cameras and lenses, initially employing three cameras. This framework, guided by Unreal Engine analysis, enabled FutureWorks to optimize camera positioning and ensure accuracy.

The ultimate configuration comprised a nine-camera setup—eight cameras providing a 360-degree horizontal view, while the ninth captured the sky. The deployment of top-tier equipment, including RED DSMC2 Helium bodies paired with quality lenses such as the 21mm Zeiss CP3 and a 6mm fisheye lens for zenith shots, minimized distortion and streamlined the stitching process.

The result was a setup boasting a 30% overlap Field of View between adjacent shots, culminating in a stitched image of 23,000px by 4,200px. All equipment, meticulously curated and sourced internally through FutureWorks’ rental team, streamlined the production process.

Constructed from bespoke aluminum components by FutureWorks’ rental team under the leadership of Nitin Yadav, Technical Head of Department, the rig was primed for live production.

Initially deployed for leading streaming service projects, the results were nothing short of extraordinary. The streamlined process facilitated swift capture of entire driving sequences, ensuring consistency in lighting and time of day—a challenge when dealing with multiple angles.

The benefits extended to the VFX team, significantly reducing their workload and expediting turnaround times. Beyond efficiency enhancements, FutureWorks witnessed a remarkable leap in quality. Shankar emphasized, “The 360-degree view enables a more accurate interaction with the environment and continuity of reflection with the background plate,” ensuring a more convincing final product.

FutureWorks’ innovative rig not only streamlined production but also set a new benchmark for the quality of driving dialogue scenes, heralding a paradigm shift in VFX technology within the industry.
