E.ON has teamed up with FocusXR, a Liverpool-based XR training solutions provider, to enhance the skills of engineers in the English West Midlands. This collaboration is part of the ongoing development at E.ON’s Net Zero training academy in Kingswinford, Birmingham.

The partnership leverages FocusXR’s expertise to create custom virtual training applications designed to simulate real-life scenarios that E.ON engineers may encounter while working in customers’ homes. The move not only drives regional innovation but also strengthens national ties with cutting-edge UK technology firms.

FocusXR’s training modules cover a broad spectrum of on-site situations, such as the installation of green technologies including heat pumps, electric vehicle chargers, solar panels, battery storage, and smart meters. By offering repeatable virtual simulations, the training allows engineers to hone their skills without the need to physically visit customer homes, thus ensuring a safer and more efficient learning process.

Safety is also a priority in the training, with FocusXR providing hazard awareness and safety check simulations to ensure engineers are thoroughly prepared for on-site work. The success of this partnership has encouraged E.ON to consider further enhancements to their AR/VR training modules, with plans to integrate AI technologies.

E.ON’s Kingswinford site, which became a net zero training hub in 2023, is now at the forefront of sustainable training practices. By incorporating XR technology, E.ON is not only teaching green skills but also contributing to its green goals by minimizing the need for travel and reducing the overall carbon footprint.

In a statement, E.ON emphasized, “By digitalizing and adapting our training methods, we are paving the way for a more sustainable and technologically advanced future.” The company is committed to ensuring that its West Midlands engineers are equipped to tackle the challenges of tomorrow, driving both technological and sustainable advancements in the energy sector.
