“Doctor Who Season 2 Goes Full Cartoon?! The Time Lord’s Wildest Adventure Yet!”
Whovians, brace yourselves! Season 2 of Doctor Who is about to take you on an adventure like never before—into the realm of animation! Disney+ has dropped an exciting new trailer, teasing the return of everyone’s favorite Time Lord, now portrayed by Ncuti Gatwa (Sex Education), and his newest travel companion, Belinda Chandra, a.k.a. The Nurse, played by Varada Sethu (Andor). And here’s the kicker—the Doctor is getting a cartoon makeover!

A Groundbreaking First for Doctor Who
While longtime fans are familiar with animated reconstructions of classic Doctor Who episodes (thanks to missing tapes from the ‘60s), this marks the first-ever originally animated episode within the main live-action series. Talk about pushing the boundaries of time and space!
According to Disney-owned ABC News, the second episode of Season 2 will catapult The Doctor and Belinda into a vibrant, animated universe where they meet Mr. Ring-a-Ding—an eccentric, sing-song-loving cartoon character voiced by Emmy-winner Alan Cumming! The trailer offers a sneak peek of the Time Lord and his companion transformed into 2D characters, evoking classic Saturday morning cartoons like Scooby-Doo.
Meet Mr. Ring-a-Ding
So, who exactly is this animated oddball? Mr. Ring-a-Ding is described as “a happy, funny, singalong cartoon who lives in Sunny Town with his pal Sunshine Sally.” But don’t let the cheerful setup fool you—this episode is poised to take a dark and eerie turn. In 1952, after years of looping on cinema screens across the land, Mr. Ring-a-Ding suddenly notices the real world outside his animated existence… and the consequences are nothing short of terrifying.
This isn’t Cumming’s first rodeo in the Doctor Who universe—he previously played King James I in the 2018 episode The Witchfinders. But this time, he’s bringing a whole new dimension (literally) to the show’s ever-expanding lore.
What’s in Store for Season 2?
The new season sees The Doctor on a quest to return Belinda to Earth. But, as any seasoned Whovian knows, things are never that simple. A mysterious force is blocking their way, and our time-traveling duo will have to navigate massive threats, new enemies, and wildly unpredictable adventures.
Joining Gatwa and Sethu this season is Millie Gibson, reprising her role as Ruby Sunday. The show also boasts an impressive guest cast, including Rose Ayling-Ellis, Christopher Chung, Rylan Clark, Anita Dobson, Freddie Fox, Michelle Greenidge, Jonah Hauer-King, Ruth Madeley, Jemma Redgrave, and Susan Twist.
The Minds Behind the Madness
Guiding this epic journey is none other than legendary Doctor Who showrunner Russell T. Davies, serving as executive producer and writer. Alongside him are fellow executive producers Joel Collins, Phil Collinson, Julie Gardner, and Jane Tranter. The series is produced by Bad Wolf in collaboration with BBC Studios for Disney Branded Television, BBC One, and BBC iPlayer.
