The beloved Disney’s Hollywood Studios is bringing back the classic Animation Academy experience in Summer 2026 as part of the new Magic of Disney Animation attraction — but the return isn’t sitting well with fans. While the original drawing class was known for its in-person instruction by live artists, Disney’s updated version replaces that component with a combination of an Audio-Animatronic Olaf and pre-recorded video lessons from Disney animators, prompting strong online criticism from longtime visitors and animation enthusiasts.

What’s Changing With Animation Academy

Between 1989 and the mid-2010s, Disney’s Animation Academy was a staple experience at Disney’s Hollywood Studios (then Disney-MGM Studios), where guests could sit with a live Disney artist and learn how to draw classic characters — often walking away with their own sketch and a cherished memory.

When the area known as Animation Courtyard closed in late 2025, Disney announced a major redevelopment of the space into The Walt Disney Animation Studios Lot, inspired by the real Burbank studio campus. This update aims to blend storytelling, interactive exhibits, character meet-and-greets, play areas, and animation-based activities into one immersive experience.

The returning Animation Academy has been rebranded as “Olaf Draws!” — a guided drawing session where Audio-Animatronic Olaf introduces the class and guests follow step-by-step instructions from pre-recorded clips featuring seasoned Disney Animation artists. Characters covered in the sessions range from Mickey and Minnie Mouse to Stitch and Genie, with recorded input from respected animators and directors.

Fan Backlash: Why Some Guests Are Disappointed

Despite excitement about the Animation Academy’s comeback, many fans have taken to social media to express disappointment over the removal of live artists — a core part of the attraction’s original charm.

On platforms like Facebook and X, guests criticized the change, arguing that live instructors made the classes feel personal, spontaneous, and interactive — elements that prerecorded videos and animatronics can’t replicate. Comments ranged from nostalgia for the human connection (“I want to draw with a wonderful human Cast Member!”) to frustration that the experience now feels impersonal or something that guests “could already do at home.”

Many longtime visitors emphasized that Cast Members are “the magic” of Disney parks, and that removing them from a creative, artistic space seems like an odd move, especially amid broader changes to Hollywood Studios that fans feel are distancing the park from its storytelling roots.

Why Disney Is Making the Change

Disney hasn’t formally explained every decision behind the shift away from live instruction, but industry observers note that pre-recorded content and animatronics can offer consistency, scheduling ease, and cost efficiencies — particularly for busy parks handling large crowds. Static programming also creates uniform sessions that avoid variations between different live artists, though critics argue this comes at the cost of personal interaction.

At the same time, Disney continues to invest in the overall Magic of Disney Animation area, which includes new themed spaces, interactive galleries inspired by feature productions, a short-film screening theater, and family-friendly play zones. The transformation of Animation Courtyard and associated attractions shows the company’s intent to refresh and expand its creative offerings.

What This Means for Future Park Experiences

For many fans, the return of Animation Academy — even in an updated form — is still welcome because it celebrates the art of animation and brings creative engagement back to Hollywood Studios. However, the removal of live artists signals a broader trend in theme park experiences toward automation and scripted interactivity, which some guests see as diminishing the personal, craft-focused elements that made the original experience special.

The broader conversation reflects ongoing debates about the role of human creativity in entertainment and how theme parks balance nostalgia with innovation. Animation fans and park visitors alike will be watching closely when Olaf Draws! officially opens later this year.
