Dhanush Breaks Silence on AI Fix: “Stripped the Film of Its Soul”

In a public statement shared via his social channels titled “For the love of cinema,” actor Dhanush expressed serious distress over the AI-altered climax of the 2013 classic Raanjhanaa (re-released as Ambikapathy, Tamil version). He remarked that the new happy ending was added despite his explicit objection, and emphasized:

“This alternate ending has stripped the film of its very soul … This is not the film I committed to 12 years ago. The use of AI to alter films … threatens the integrity of storytelling and the legacy of cinema.”

Director Aanand L. Rai Labels It a “Dangerous Precedent”

Filmmaker Aanand L. Rai has strongly criticized the alteration, calling it an irresponsible usurpation of creative intent. He confirmed that he and Dhanush are assessing legal action to protect their artistic rights and future works. Rai warned that the incident sets a dangerous precedent for the industry.
He described the AI edit as a “reckless takeover” and “abject betrayal,” stressing that the original version—crafted with human intent and emotion—has been overwritten without permission.

Industry Backlash & Support

  • Neeraj Pandey condemned the alteration as “utterly disrespectful,” aligning with L. Rai and Dhanush’s stance.
  • Farhan Akhtar publicly backed Aanand L. Rai, stating, “If a creator is unhappy about their work being changed, I will support them.”

Studio Perspective: Eros Defends the Rewrite

Eros International has rebutted accusations, stating the AI version is a “lawful and creative reinterpretation” distinct from the original and aimed at anniversary re-release markets. They maintain that moral rights were contractually waived, granting them full authority to adapt and distribute the film.
They further claim no formal objection was raised by Dhanush or his team prior to the re-release.

Why it Matters: Legal, Ethical & Industry Ramifications
