Basilic Fly, a prominent VFX studio headquartered in Chennai, has announced its acquisition of a 70% stake in London and Paris-based VFX studio One of Us. This strategic move expands the combined workforce of the two studios to over 900 artists.
One of Us, established in 2004 by Rachael Penfold, Dominic Parker, and Tom Debenham, is renowned for its award-winning work on high-profile projects such as The Crown, The Witcher, and The Alienist, for which it has received BAFTA TV awards and an Emmy. The studio operates with a team of over 450 across its London and Paris locations. Despite the acquisition, the current leadership team at One of Us will continue to manage the company’s day-to-day operations.
Basilic Fly, which has studios in Chennai, Pune, Vancouver, and London, currently boasts a workforce of over 500. The studio has contributed to major films such as Avatar, Avengers: Endgame, and The Last of Us. The two companies have a history of collaboration on projects like Bridgerton (S1/2), Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, Napoleon, and Zone of Interest.
The merger is set to enhance the capabilities of both studios, allowing them to offer more agile and comprehensive VFX services to film, streaming, and TV content producers. The combined talent and resources will support Basilic Fly’s goal of evolving from a service provider into a full-fledged creative studio.
Balakrishnan, CEO and co-founder of Basilic Fly Studios, expressed his enthusiasm about the acquisition: “Since founding Basilic Fly Studios in 2013, our goal has been to establish an international partner for the film, TV, and streaming industries. Today’s acquisition of One of Us is a significant step towards achieving this vision. Our shared experiences and mutual respect for each other’s creative talents make this partnership incredibly promising. I am confident that together we will achieve remarkable success.”
