The BBC, in collaboration with multi-Oscar-nominated Magic Light Pictures, has announced the upcoming release of “Tiddler,” a new animated adaptation from the UK’s beloved picture book creators Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. Set to air on BBC iPlayer and BBC One this Christmas, “Tiddler” promises to enchant audiences with its heartwarming tale of a little fish with a big imagination.

“Tiddler” follows the adventures of a small grey fish who, through his imaginative storytelling, finds himself lost in the deep ocean until his tales ultimately help him find his way home. The half-hour special features an impressive voice cast led by Hannah Waddingham (Ted Lasso, Game of Thrones) as the narrator. Other notable voices include Lolly Adefope (Ghosts, Saltburn) as Miss Skate, Jayde Adams (Ruby Speaking, Alma’s Not Normal) as Plaice, and Rob Brydon (Gavin and Stacey, The Trip) in multiple roles. Young actors Reuben Kirby and Theo Fraser bring life to Tiddler and his friend Johnny Dory.

Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, expressed her excitement: “Magic Light’s adaptations of Julia and Axel’s work have become a cherished part of our national culture. We’re thrilled to introduce Tiddler, a character who’s sure to delight viewers this Christmas.”

The story highlights Tiddler’s imaginative excuses for being late to school, ranging from riding seahorses to escaping squid capture. These captivating tales spread throughout the ocean, playing a crucial role when Tiddler gets lost. The film is a celebration of the power of imagination and self-confidence, set against a backdrop of beautifully illustrated underwater scenes.

Julia Donaldson, the author, shared her enthusiasm: “Tiddler is all about storytelling and big imaginations – themes close to my heart. The film captures the essence of the story wonderfully, and I’m particularly impressed by the young actors who lead this adaptation.”

Hannah Waddingham, the narrator, added: “Voicing the narrator for this Christmas special has been a joy. Tiddler’s tale is relatable for anyone who’s felt like a small fish in a big pond. I’ve loved reading Julia and Axel’s books to my daughter, and it’s delightful to bring one to screen.”

Producer Barney Goodland commented: “Tiddler is a beautifully illustrated and imaginative adventure that celebrates storytelling. We’re excited to share our adaptation of this classic with families this Christmas.”

Directed by Andy Martin and Alex Bain, written by Michael Bohnenstingl, and produced by Barney Goodland and Martin Pope of Magic Light Pictures, “Tiddler” continues the tradition of captivating adaptations from Donaldson and Scheffler’s works. Last year’s special, “Tabby McTat,” drew an audience of 8.6 million, and expectations are high for “Tiddler” to make a similarly big splash.
