Blizzard’s Biggest Mistake? Why Pros Want Overwatch 6v6 Back

The Great 6v6 Revival: Why Overwatch 2 Pros Want the Classic Format Back

Overwatch 2’s esports scene is buzzing with a hot debate—should Blizzard bring back the beloved 6v6 format? After the recent Classic experimental event, players and pros alike are making a strong case for its return.

When Overwatch 2 first swapped from 6v6 to 5v5, the decision was met with mixed reactions. Some welcomed the change, arguing it streamlined gameplay, while others felt it robbed the game of its depth. Now, as Blizzard teases a mini-competitive season featuring 6v6 in Season 15, the discussion has reignited. Could this be the change the Overwatch esports scene desperately needs?

Why the 6v6 Nostalgia is Hitting Hard

From balance issues to role identity, players have long questioned whether returning to the original team format could resolve many of Overwatch 2’s problems. A major concern has been the lone tank role, which often feels overwhelming, leading to an imbalance in gameplay.

Popular streamer Samito took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his stance, saying, “6v6 has the special sauce—big moments, unique hero identity, and skill expression. Overwatch 2 will never peak in 5v5.”

Even Overwatch 2’s game director, Aaron Keller, acknowledged the demand for 6v6 in a recent Director’s Take blog. He revealed that during Season 14’s limited-time 6v6 event, nearly 10% of all community playtime was spent in the mode. That’s a strong indicator that fans are ready for the classic experience to make a full-time return.

Pros Once Supported 5v5—What Changed?

Interestingly, when Overwatch 2 first launched, many professional players welcomed 5v5. Former Overwatch pro William ‘Crimzo’ Hernandez even said, “After months of scrims and two betas, it’s a no-brainer that 5v5 was the right approach.”

Fast forward to today, and the sentiment has shifted drastically. Xander ‘Hawk’ Domecq from Spacestation Gaming admitted, “6v6 reminded me how challenging Overwatch once was. The game is so much more mentally stimulating.”

With Overwatch esports already struggling—especially after the closure of the Overwatch League—many pros see 6v6 as a potential lifeline rather than a step backward.

Should Overwatch Esports Officially Shift to 6v6?

While excitement for 6v6 is at an all-time high, transitioning back isn’t as simple as flipping a switch. Overwatch Champions Series (OWCS) teams would need to recruit an extra player, rethink strategies, and adapt their playstyles. The addition of a second tank would significantly impact team compositions, coordination, and crowd control mechanics.

For now, Blizzard is testing the waters with a mini-competitive season of 6v6 in mid-Season 15. If it proves successful, could we see an official return to 6v6 in Overwatch 2 esports?

One thing is clear—pros, streamers, and casual players alike are rallying behind the classic format. The question is, will Blizzard listen?
