“Oswald the Lucky Rabbit Returns! Jon Favreau’s Disney+ Series Is Bringing Back a Lost Legend! “

Move over, Mickey—Oswald the Lucky Rabbit is back in action! Disney’s long-lost cartoon icon is making a grand return, and none other than Jon Favreau (The Mandalorian, The Jungle Book) is bringing the character into the spotlight with an all-new hybrid series for Disney+.

This marks a major revival for Oswald, a character created by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks back in 1927. Though he predated Mickey Mouse, Oswald’s journey took a detour when he was snapped up by Universal Pictures, leading Walt to create a new character—yep, you guessed it—Mickey Mouse! Now, nearly a century later, Oswald is finally reclaiming his place in Disney history.

A Lucky Comeback: Oswald’s Journey Through the Years

Oswald might have been missing from Disney’s lineup for decades, but his luck turned around when Bob Iger—then-President of Disney—made it his mission to bring the rabbit home. In 2006, Disney officially reacquired the rights to Oswald from NBCUniversal, setting the stage for his comeback.

Since then, Oswald has been popping up in various Disney projects:

  • 2010: He played a major role in the video game Epic Mickey.
  • 2013: He made a brief animated cameo in the Oscar-nominated short Get a Horse!.
  • 2022: Disney dropped a new Oswald short film on YouTube to celebrate the company’s 100th anniversary.
  • 2023: He appeared in Once Upon a Studio, a heartfelt tribute to Disney’s animated legacy.

And now, with Jon Favreau leading the charge, Oswald is finally getting his own modern series!

A Hybrid Series—But What Does That Mean?

The new Oswald the Lucky Rabbit series is being described as a “hybrid” project, meaning we’ll likely see a mix of live-action and animation—much like Who Framed Roger Rabbit? or Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers. Given Favreau’s experience blending CGI with live-action (The Jungle Book, The Lion King), we can expect something visually stunning that pays homage to Oswald’s classic roots while modernizing his antics for today’s audience.

Why Oswald’s Return Is a Big Deal

For hardcore Disney fans and animation buffs, Oswald’s return isn’t just another reboot—it’s a historic moment. Before Mickey, Oswald was Walt Disney’s first animated star. His mischievous personality, rubbery animation style, and innovative storytelling helped shape the early days of animation.

With Favreau at the helm, this series has the potential to introduce Oswald to a whole new generation while giving longtime fans the nostalgic throwback they’ve been waiting for.

When Can We Expect It?

Jon Favreau is currently busy directing The Mandalorian & Grogu, set to hit Disney+ in 2026. While there’s no official release date yet for the Oswald the Lucky Rabbit series, it’s safe to assume it’ll hop onto Disney+ sometime after 2026.

Until then, fans can revisit Oswald’s past adventures, watch his latest short films, and gear up for what could be one of the most exciting Disney revivals in years!

The Rabbit Is Ready to Shine!

Oswald has been waiting nearly 100 years for his moment in the Disney spotlight. With a visionary like Jon Favreau behind the project, this upcoming series could be a game-changer for Disney animation. So, get ready—the luckiest rabbit in showbiz is about to take center stage once again!
