Renowned comic artist and educator Dilip Chaubey has established India’s inaugural comic book school, known as The Dilip Chaubey School of Art (DCSA), offering a six-month certification program in Character Design, Comic Illustration, and Digital Art at its Lucknow campus.

With an extensive background spanning over 30 years in illustration and teaching, Chaubey previously held a senior professorship in Digital Arts at an American University. Notably, he contributed as an illustrator at Raj Comics during the 90s, creating iconic characters like Tiranga, Parmanu, and Fighter Toads, amassing a portfolio of over 300 comics. With 14 years of international teaching experience, Chaubey brings recognized expertise to the fore.

DCSA, under Chaubey’s guidance, is committed to nurturing artists in sequential arts and elevating the standards within the comics industry. The institute adopts a practical, skill-oriented learning approach, offering industry-aligned training to mold students into highly skilled artists. Promising an internationally calibrated curriculum, DCSA aims to bridge the gap between Indian and global comic art standards.

Chaubey, the founder and dean of DCSA, highlighted the disparity between Indian comic art and global giants like Marvel and DC, attributing the slow growth of the Indian comics industry to this discrepancy. He emphasized the necessity for formal comic art education, skill-focused learning methods, and adequate resources to enable aspiring artists to excel and forge successful careers in this field.

This program caters to artists with prior formal art education who seek to enhance their skills or transition into the realm of comics and sequential art. The curriculum spans foundational, advanced, and specialized modules, incorporating both individual and team-based projects. Graduates of the program have the opportunity to interview for positions at Chaubey’s Vinmics Studios. Various career paths, including Concept Artist, Character Designer, Storyboard Artist, Game Asset Designer, Comic Illustrator, Children’s Book Illustrator, Digital Colorist, and Art Educator, become available for students.

Neeraj Dadlani, co-founder & CEO at Desi Creative Group (DCSA’s parent company), highlighted how program graduates emerge as industry-ready professionals, set to lead and produce top-notch comic content. This influx of top-tier talent ensures publishers access highly skilled artists, delivering superior quality work that enhances readers’ experiences and contributes to the growth of readership.

Furthermore, he stressed the critical need for skilled artists to propel the industry’s evolution and meet the increasing demand, pivotal for India’s comics industry to evolve into an established entity.
