“César Awards Shock: ‘Flow’ & ‘Yuck!!’ Dominate the Night in a Stunning Animation Upset!”

The French film industry has spoken! The prestigious César Awards—often dubbed the French Oscars—have once again celebrated the magic of animation, and this year’s big winners are Flow and Yuck!!. These two animated gems have captivated audiences and critics alike, proving that animation is more than just child’s play—it’s pure cinematic artistry.

Flow Rides the Wave to Victory

Gints Zilbalodis’s breathtaking animated feature Flow has bagged the César for Best Animated Feature, cementing its place as one of the most celebrated animated films of the year. Flow triumphed over stiff competition, including Michel Hazanavicius’s Holocaust-themed The Most Precious of Cargoes and Claude Barras’s Savages, both of which also made waves at Annecy last year.

For those unfamiliar with Flow, the film follows the journey of a cat navigating a post-apocalyptic world. Yes, you read that right—an animated cat is stealing hearts and awards left and right! But don’t let the feline protagonist fool you; this visually stunning adventure is an emotional rollercoaster that speaks volumes about survival, companionship, and resilience.

The story doesn’t end here! Flow is now gearing up for its next big challenge—competing for the Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards. It’s up against some heavyweight contenders, including Pixar’s Inside Out 2, Memoir of a Snail, Wallace and Gromit: Revenge Most Fowl, and The Wild Robot. With its mesmerizing animation and heartfelt narrative, Flow has already won over European audiences, but will it conquer Hollywood too? The Oscars will tell!

Yuck!! Wins, but There’s Nothing Gross About It

In the short film category, the hilariously charming Yuck!! directed by Loïc Espuche took home the César for Best Animated Short. Produced by Juliette Marquet and Manon Messiant, this witty and relatable short film dives into the awkwardness of a first kiss at a summer camp. Nostalgic, funny, and beautifully animated, Yuck!! proves that even the most cringeworthy childhood moments can make for award-winning storytelling.

The competition in this category was fierce, with Cynthia Calvi’s Gigi and Florence Miailhe’s Butterfly also in the running. But Yuck!! wasn’t just a favorite in France—it’s also one of the five shorts nominated for an Oscar. Can this delightful French short woo the Academy and take home another golden statuette? We’ll have to wait and see.

A VFX Win for Emilia Perez

While animation stole the show, visual effects also had their moment in the spotlight. The Best Visual Effects César was awarded to Cédric Fayolle for his groundbreaking work on Netflix’s Emilia Perez. Not only did the film impress with its innovative VFX, but it also took home the coveted Best Feature prize. It’s yet another win for Netflix, proving that streaming platforms are a force to be reckoned with in the world of high-caliber cinema.

What’s Next for These Winners?

With the Oscars just around the corner, both Flow and Yuck!! are on a high-stakes journey toward possible global recognition. Whether they manage to take home the Academy Award or not, one thing is certain—these films have already made a lasting impact in the world of animation.

From a post-apocalyptic cat adventure to a hilariously awkward summer camp kiss, this year’s César winners showcase the sheer diversity and brilliance of animation. And if you haven’t watched them yet, consider this your official cue to do so—before they become even bigger legends on the awards circuit!
