“BGMI’s Big Bet: How Krafton is Powering India’s Gaming Revolution!”

Krafton has been a game-changer in India’s mobile gaming scene ever since it launched PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) Mobile in 2018. Despite regulatory challenges, the company adapted by introducing Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI), a dedicated version tailored specifically for Indian players. Over the past 6.5 years, Krafton has gained deep insights into India’s rapidly evolving gaming industry, setting itself apart as a company that truly understands the local market.

In an exclusive interview with IGN India, Krafton CEO Changhan “CH” Kim shared his thoughts on the challenges of operating in India, the role of government regulations, and the company’s vision for the future.

India’s Gaming Boom & Krafton’s Role

India’s gaming industry is still in its early stages, but it’s growing at an unprecedented pace. Kim acknowledges the need for structured regulations and policies to ensure long-term growth. He compared India’s current gaming landscape to South Korea’s industry two decades ago, emphasizing that government support and proper frameworks are essential for maturity.

“The government is now working on regulations and frameworks to help the industry grow. South Korea has been doing this for the past twenty years already, so Krafton would like to cooperate and offer support in creating this kind of framework to ensure the Indian gaming industry matures in a stable manner.” – Changhan “CH” Kim

However, India presents unique challenges. Unlike smaller, more homogenous markets, India is a vast country with diverse languages, cultures, and preferences. Understanding these regional differences is key to BGMI’s expansion and longevity.

“Even though India is one country, it’s a mix of different cultures and languages. The more we understand these regional specificities, the better we can serve the players.” – Kim

Regulatory Hurdles & The Future of BGMI

Navigating India’s regulatory environment has been one of Krafton’s biggest challenges. The government’s stance on mobile gaming, data security, and digital policies continues to evolve. However, Krafton remains committed to working closely with policymakers to ensure compliance and contribute to shaping India’s gaming landscape.

Despite these hurdles, BGMI has maintained a strong foothold in the Indian gaming market. With a growing esports ecosystem and millions of dedicated players, Krafton sees tremendous potential in further expanding its presence.

The Road Ahead for Krafton India

Krafton’s long-term vision includes: Investing in India’s gaming ecosystem – Supporting local developers, startups, and esports tournaments. Enhancing regional content – Creating culturally relevant in-game events and collaborations. Strengthening regulatory partnerships – Working with policymakers to establish fair and sustainable gaming regulations. Innovating with new gaming experiences – Expanding beyond BGMI and exploring new game genres for Indian players.

Final Thoughts: A Learning Curve with Huge Potential

Kim acknowledges that understanding India’s market is a continuous learning process. However, Krafton is committed to adapting, evolving, and playing a key role in shaping India’s gaming future. As the company continues to grow, one thing is clear: BGMI isn’t just a game—it’s a movement that’s defining mobile gaming in India.

With government regulations shaping the industry’s next chapter, players and developers alike can expect exciting opportunities in the years ahead. Stay tuned—because the battle for India’s gaming future is just getting started!
