“This Epic Zelda Anime Opening Will Blow Your Mind—But You’ll Never Get to Watch It!”

While we twiddle our thumbs waiting for more news on the upcoming live-action Legend of Zelda adaptation—first announced in 2023—something magical has graced the internet. Enter an animated masterpiece that reimagines The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild as an anime series. And let’s be real: it’s so good that it hurts to know it’s not real.

This gem, uploaded to YouTube in January, is the brainchild of a talented second-year class at Chungkang Animation School. Clocking in at two and a half minutes, this short film transforms Breath of the Wild’s beloved characters into a dynamic team of anime heroes embarking on an epic quest to save Hyrule. The project is set to the electrifying 2021 J-pop single “RGB” by Yoasobi, and let’s just say it delivers all the goosebumps. It’s the kind of fan-made creation that makes you jump between two emotions: pure joy at how incredible it looks and sheer heartbreak that it’s not an official series.

Anime Tropes? Check. Pure Nostalgia? Double Check.

From the very first frame, the short film nails the essence of an anime opening sequence. There’s the obligatory moody shot of Link, standing deep in thought as Purah’s image fades in next to him (hello, Tears of the Kingdom nod). Then there’s the sinister tease of Calamity Ganon, silhouetted against a blood-red moon, exuding maximum menace. And of course, what would an anime opening be without an exhilarating running montage? Yes, they checked that box, too.

The animation team didn’t just capture the look of an anime; they captured its soul. The pacing, editing, and fluid motion all scream professional-grade work. If you didn’t know better, you’d swear this was a teaser for an actual Legend of Zelda anime set to drop next season. (Alas, it’s not—but let’s dream.)

A Behind-the-Scenes Treasure Trove

For those who appreciate the nitty-gritty details of animation, the team has been sharing behind-the-scenes peeks at their work. Character model sheets, Genga key animation, and production insights have been popping up on the short’s official profile, as well as on the team’s individual accounts on X (formerly Twitter). It’s a fascinating look into how this masterpiece was crafted, and honestly, it only deepens the appreciation for their hard work.

What’s Next? We’re Watching Closely.

As of now, there’s no word on what this animation team will be tackling next, but one thing’s for sure: they’ve put themselves on the map in a major way. Whether they move on to original projects or (fingers crossed) get tapped to work on something official for the Zelda franchise, fans are watching with bated breath.

Until then, we’ll have to be content with hitting replay on this brilliant short film—and wishing Nintendo would take the hint and give us the Legend of Zelda anime we so desperately need. Seriously, Nintendo, the fans are ready. Are you?

Final Thoughts

This fan-made opening is a perfect blend of nostalgia, creativity, and talent. It proves yet again that the Legend of Zelda universe is ripe for an anime adaptation. If a group of students can deliver something this breathtaking, imagine what a full-fledged studio could do with an official series.

But until that dream becomes reality, this animated short will be our bittersweet glimpse into what could have been. And trust us—you’ll want to watch it more than once.
