Universal Pictures had much to celebrate this weekend as their animated feature “Kung Fu Panda 4” soared to the top of the box office charts with a staggering $58.3 million in domestic ticket sales, marking a triumphant return for the DreamWorks Animation franchise. Surpassing expectations, the film’s debut rivaled only the original installment’s opening weekend in 2008, demonstrating the enduring appeal of Jack Black’s beloved panda warrior, Po.

The success of “Kung Fu Panda 4” was bolstered by its timing as the first major family-oriented release since December’s “Migration” and “Wonka,” resonating well with audiences seeking wholesome entertainment. Internationally, the film garnered an additional $22 million, further solidifying its global impact.

Meanwhile, “Dune: Part Two,” the highly anticipated sequel to Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic, continued its impressive performance in its second week, maintaining its position near the top of the box office charts. With a modest 44% drop in ticket sales, the film amassed an impressive $46 million domestically, bringing its cumulative total to $157 million for Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures.

Despite stiff competition, “Dune: Part Two” has garnered strong reviews and positive word-of-mouth, positioning it for a prolonged theatrical run and potentially even consideration at next year’s Academy Awards.

In other box office news, Lionsgate and Blumhouse’s horror release “Imaginary” made its debut in third place with $10 million, while “Cabrini,” a biographical drama about the 19th-century missionary Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini, collected $7.5 million in its opening weekend under the banner of Angel Studios, the studio behind the 2023 surprise hit “Sound of Freedom.”

Additionally, A24’s neo-noir film “Love Lies Bleeding,” starring Kristen Stewart, made a promising start in limited release, grossing $167,463 across five screens in New York and Los Angeles, boasting an impressive per-screen average of $33,493.

With final domestic figures set to be released Monday, the weekend’s box office results underscore the diverse range of offerings captivating audiences across the nation.
