Imaginary Pictures, a prominent VFX house, has introduced an innovative holoportation service, enabling the transmission of high-quality 3D models of people and products in real-time anywhere in the world. This groundbreaking technology, labeled ‘holoportation’, has been made possible through the collaboration with LA-based tech company Proto, which has developed the necessary innovation.

Utilizing high-speed broadband and 5G networks, the holoportation service offers a diverse range of applications. Whether for conferences, live events, pre-recorded presentations, or product showcases, the potential market for holoportation is deemed significant by industry experts.

Imaginary Pictures has already showcased the capabilities of holoportation in various settings, including major sporting events, exhibitions, and conferences. In the UK, the company has utilized this technology for live broadcasts, including a demonstration of global connectivity using 5G in collaboration with Virgin Media O2.

One notable application of holoportation was seen in an art and jewelry auction, where live holograms of artists were beamed from London to Saudi Arabia. Kevin Zemrowsky, the technical director at Imaginary Pictures, expressed enthusiasm about the technology’s potential, stating that while video conferencing and 3D imaging have been around for some time, holoportation offers a new level of immersion, making interactions feel more lifelike.

With the ability to create full-sized or desktop-sized holograms, holoportation has the capacity to revolutionize the way people engage with live events and product displays, bridging the gap between the physical and virtual worlds. As this technology continues to evolve and become more accessible, it opens up exciting possibilities for various industries, promising a future where individuals can be virtually present anywhere in the world.
