he Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF) — widely regarded as North America’s premier animation celebration — is marking a major milestone in 2026. To commemorate its 50th anniversary, the festival has revealed an exclusive new poster created by celebrated Canadian cartoonist and designer Seth, reflecting both the festival’s artistic heritage and its forward-looking spirit.

A Landmark Anniversary Artwork

This year’s official festival poster — commissioned annually as part of OIAF’s long-standing tradition — showcases Seth’s distinctive mid-century aesthetic and imaginative storytelling.

The artwork features a scholarly owl named Owlbert surrounded by towering books, alongside Frogworth, a frog operating a classic film projector. These whimsical characters symbolize the blend of creativity, intellect, and humor that defines the festival’s ethos.

In his artist statement, Seth explained that his only direction was to include an owl — a classic cartoon motif — but the design organically expanded into a unique scene celebrating the magic of animation.

About the Ottawa International Animation Festival

Founded in 1976, the OIAF has grown into the largest and oldest animation festival in North America, drawing filmmakers, artists, and fans from around the globe.

Held annually in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, the festival spans several days of screenings, exhibitions, panels, and industry events celebrating the full spectrum of animated work — from traditional hand-drawn shorts to cutting-edge experimental pieces.

Each iteration of the festival also commissions a new poster from a different artist, a practice that has included renowned names in animation and illustration over the decades, reinforcing the event’s deep connection to the art form.

What to Expect at the 50th Festival

The 50th anniversary edition of OIAF will return to Ottawa this September, featuring:

  • World-premiere screenings of international animated films
  • Spotlight programs on experimental and independent animation
  • Industry panels and workshops for creators and professionals
  • Networking events and studio showcases for emerging talent
