India’s deep-seated love for cricket has long defined its sports culture. Now, another contender is leveraging the nation’s digital momentum: esports. Here’s a look at why competitive gaming could become India’s next sporting obsession.

Mobile-Driven, Youth-Powered

As a mobile-first market, India’s esports boom is powered by titles like BGMI, Free Fire, and Valorant, which are accessible on affordable smartphones. With over 800 million internet users in early 2025, the country’s digitally native youth is embracing gaming both as entertainment and a competitive platform.

A Legitimate Sport at Last

A pivotal shift occurred in late 2022 when esports earned government recognition as a legit sport—leveling its status with cricket and opening doors for structured tournaments and institutional support. India’s strategic positioning continued with medal wins and official inclusion in major events across the Asian Games and the upcoming Olympic Esports Games.

Market Momentum: Revenue, Viewership & Jobs

The numbers are impressive:

  • Esports in India is poised to become a ₹11 billion (~$130 million) market by 2025, spanning viewership, sponsorships, and tournaments.
  • According to industry forecasts, esports growth could create over 11,000 new jobs by 2025, touching areas like commentary, analytics, event management, and beyond.
  • Viewership is scaling rapidly—from millions in 2021 to tens of millions by 2025

Esports Meets Cricket DNA

Several parallels to cricket have emerged. Franchised tournaments like the Krafton IPL-style league and expansions by established ecosystems are solidifying structured competitive opportunities. Meanwhile, digital cricket formats are capturing audiences, especially with platforms like GEPL connecting fans, players, and sponsors

India’s Talent on the Global Stage

A landmark moment came when Ved “Beelzeboy” Bamb from Nagpur won the Pokémon GO World Championship 2025—the first Indian to clinch a global esports title—and sparked nationwide celebration.

Institutional efforts are fueling this rise:

  • The eSports Federation of India (ESFI) orchestrates national and international representation via events like the WAVES Esports Championship 2025.

Challenges & Road Ahead

Despite rapid growth, esports in India still must overcome key hurdles:

  • Perception gaps still tie esports to casual gaming and gambling, limiting societal acceptance.
  • Infrastructure outside major cities remains underdeveloped, hindering access to professional-level training and connectivity.
  • Clear regulatory frameworks and industry cohesion will be essential to sustain progress.

Still, with organized leagues, media attention, celebrity engagement, and youth appetite converging, the future looks bright. As one commentator put it: esports could soon become the second most-watched sport in India after cricket
