The LEGO Group and acclaimed animation studio Aardman (creators of Wallace & Gromit) have partnered to launch a creative, stop-motion storytelling challenge that comes alive within the LEGO Play app, aiming to spark inspiration in young builders everywhere.

An animated short introducing the challenge features Boop, an alien sculpted in Aardman’s classic clay style, transported into a LEGO-constructed universe. Boop meets LEGO minifigures, and the storyline is intentionally left open—inviting young creators to animate the next chapter using the app.

To deepen engagement, five mini stop-motion challenge films, including Build Your Own Boop, will be released monthly. Additionally, director Magda Osinska hosts an inspiring video workshop on LEGO.com, complemented by influencer-led tutorials aimed at guiding kids and aspiring animators.

Anna Rafferty, SVP of Digital Consumer Engagement at the LEGO Group, expressed excitement, calling the collaboration “incredibly exciting” and applauding Aardman for aligning with LEGO on creativity and play. Aardman’s Chief Creative Director, Sarah Cox, described the partnership as a joyful collaboration rooted in mutual respect and shared values.

Currently, LEGO Play is available in 76 countries and 25 languages across the Apple App Store and Google Play. To submit their Boop animations, young users must join the LEGO Insiders Club, gaining access to exclusive content, customizable avatars, and a platform to showcase their best creations.

Why This Matters for AVGC & XR Education

  • Hands-On Learning: Empowers children to create narrative animations using stop-motion techniques alongside storytelling.
  • Industry Vet Inspiration: Collaboration with Aardman bridges professional animation expertise with educational outreach.
  • Interactive Community: The LEGO Play app and Insiders Club build a platform for shared creativity and peer recognition.
