This weekend, Warner Bros. scored a box office victory with Zach Cregger’s horror-thriller Weapons, which opened to $42.5 million domestically and $70 million worldwide—surpassing Disney’s sequel Freakier Friday, which earned $29 million domestically and $45 million globally.

Weapons marks the studio’s seventh No. 1 opening of 2025 and the sixth straight release to exceed $40 million domestically, reinforcing Warner Bros.’ rejuvenated box office traction.

Critical praise and social media buzz helped Weapons outperform expectations and nearly outgross both Freakier Friday and Fantastic Four: First Steps combined.

Why It Matters

  • Genre invests pay off: This performance underscores strong audience appetite for bold horror storytelling, even against established franchise fare.
  • Warner Bros.’ momentum: Solidifies the studio’s resurgence through successful original properties.
  • Shift in counters: The success highlights the growing potential of original horror over legacy family comedies in this summer release slate.
