This Hilarious Classic Anime Took 40 Years to Get an English Release—Now It’s FREE on YouTube!

North American anime fans, your prayers (and puns) have finally been answered. After decades of staying locked in Japanese-only hilarity, the legendary anime comedy KochiKame (short for Kochira Katsushika-ku Kameari Kōen-mae Hashutsujo, but let’s be real—no one’s memorizing that) is finally getting its first-ever English-subtitled release. And the best part? It’s totally free. Yes, free—as in zero yen.

Thanks to anime distributor REMOW, all 373 glorious, laugh-packed episodes of KochiKame are making their way to English-speaking audiences via the It’s Anime YouTube channel. The premiere episode is already live, and new episodes will drop every week. That means a steady supply of nostalgia, slapstick, and side-splitting chaos—now with subtitles.

Who is Ryo-san, and Why Should You Care?

Let us introduce Ryotsu Kankichi—aka Ryo-san—a lovable, money-obsessed, rule-bending beat cop with a heart of gold (and sometimes gold teeth). He works at the local Tokyo police station, but don’t expect much law enforcement. His daily duties involve far more mischief than missions.

Flanked by a cast of characters that could’ve escaped from a comedy circus—like the rich pretty-boy Nakagawa, the beautiful and badass Reiko, and their perpetually furious boss Chief Ohara—Ryo-san’s misadventures are anything but routine. Expect lottery schemes, get-rich-quick disasters, and lots (and we mean lots) of yelling.

From Manga Legend to Global Laughter

If you’re wondering why this name rings a bell—it should. KochiKame holds the Guinness World Record for the longest-running manga series in Weekly Shonen Jump history, published by Shueisha for a jaw-dropping 40 years. That’s four decades of laughs, pranks, and peak dad-joke energy packed into a cultural icon.

Despite its massive success in Japan and being a top-selling manga series of all time, KochiKame somehow never made its way to English-speaking audiences. Until now. This release is a moment of pure anime justice—and a whole new generation is about to discover what Japanese families have been giggling about since the ‘70s.

When and Where to Watch

New English-subtitled episodes of KochiKame drop weekly on the It’s Anime YouTube channel, which caters to North American viewers. No subscription, no paywall, no crunchy commitments—just pure, classic anime comedy delivered straight to your screen.

While you’re there, don’t miss other gems on the channel, including titles like:
REBORN!

Yakitate!! JAPAN (bread-making battles never looked this intense)

My Little Monster

True Cooking Master Boy

And coming soon: High School! Kimengumi.

Basically, It’s Anime is shaping up to be a nostalgia-fueled paradise for anime lovers.

Why This Release Matters

For die-hard anime historians and new fans alike, this is more than a streaming announcement. It’s a cultural revival. KochiKame isn’t just funny—it’s a time capsule of Japanese humor, animation style, and storytelling from an era where gags and goofy charm ruled the screen.

It’s the type of show where chaos meets heart, tradition meets absurdity, and every episode leaves you wondering how Ryo-san still has a job. And now, for the first time ever, fans outside Japan can finally join in on the madness.
