JUJUTSU KAISEN Movie Drops a Bombshell: Gojo and Geto’s Tragic Origin Hits U.S. Theaters This July!

Brace yourselves, Jujutsu sorcerers — the curse-laden chaos is coming to a theater near you! GKIDS has officially acquired North American theatrical distribution rights for JUJUTSU KAISEN: Hidden Inventory / Premature Death – The Movie, landing in theaters nationwide on July 16 in both subtitled and dubbed versions.

This marks GKIDS’ first leap into the JUJUTSU KAISEN universe, and what an entry it is. The film revisits the emotionally intense, action-heavy “Hidden Inventory / Premature Death” arc—an unforgettable tale that unpacks the tragic past of fan-favorites Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto before they became bitter enemies.

The Mission That Changed Everything

Originally featured in Season 2 of the anime, the arc centers on Gojo and Geto’s mission to protect Riko Amanai, a Star Plasma Vessel, from fanatical enemies and curse users. Their success—or failure—sets the emotional and narrative tone for the events that follow in the JUJUTSU KAISEN timeline.

More Than a Recap—A Full Theatrical Experience

This release isn’t just a compilation. With remixed sound and enhanced visuals, the film offers a full-blown cinematic upgrade, promising the same emotional impact and animation excellence as JUJUTSU KAISEN 0, which grossed over $188 million globally.

Following its May 30 release in Japan, the U.S. debut comes with plenty of hype. Fans are already buzzing about the trailer featuring a new acoustic version of Tatsuya Kitani’s “Where Our Blue Is”—a track with over 100 million YouTube views and 200 million Spotify streams.

A Modern Shonen Phenomenon

Produced by MAPPA (the same powerhouse behind Attack on Titan‘s final seasons), JUJUTSU KAISEN has become a cultural juggernaut since its 2020 debut. The anime, based on Gege Akutami’s hit manga in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump, took home “Anime of the Year” at the 2024 Crunchyroll Anime Awards after Season 2’s conclusion in December 2023.

The Origin That Broke the Internet

This arc isn’t just another backstory—it’s the backstory. It gives us the rise and fall of one of anime’s most iconic friendships, showcasing the pain behind Gojo’s shades and Geto’s fall from grace. It’s heartbreak, worldbuilding, and next-level animation in one unforgettable package.

Whether you’re in it for the jaw-dropping sakuga, the emotionally charged storytelling, or just curious why Gojo became the world’s sassiest sorcerer, this movie is your must-watch anime event of the summer.

JUJUTSU KAISEN: Hidden Inventory / Premature Death – The Movie premieres in U.S. theaters on July 16. Get ready for the pain—and bring popcorn and tissues.
