From Earth’s Ashes to the Stars: How Dandelion’s Odyssey Redefines Animated Adventure!

Imagine a fiery apocalypse that propels you into the vastness of space—sounds like a journey you wouldn’t want to miss, right? Enter Dandelion’s Odyssey, a groundbreaking animated feature that dares to explore the cosmos through the eyes of… dandelion seeds. Yes, you read that right. This isn’t your average animated tale, but one that merges science, artistry, and imagination in a stunning post-apocalyptic setting.

Dandelion’s Odyssey, also known as Planètes in French, is a captivating non-dialogue film directed by Momoko Seto, acclaimed for her previous works Planet Sigma and Octopus Love Affair. Seto’s feature debut blends gorgeous animation, heartfelt storytelling, and an exploration of nature’s persistence even in the wake of Earth’s destruction. The film will have its world premiere as the closing film of the prestigious 64th Semaine de la Critique (Critic’s Week) at Cannes (May 14–22)—a fitting stage for a film that’s anything but conventional.

The Seeds of a Journey

The story begins with four brave dandelion achenes—Dandelion, Baraban, Léonto, and Taraxa—who survive a series of nuclear explosions that ravage Earth. Thrust into space with no home to return to, these seeds embark on a quest for survival. Crash-landing on a mysterious planet, they search for fertile soil to continue their lineage, facing elemental chaos, alien predators, and environmental extremes along the way.

Animation as Art and Science

Seto’s vision comes alive through innovative animation techniques that push boundaries. Using time-lapse photography to capture nature’s slow magic and ultra slow-motion to highlight rapid transformations, the film immerses viewers in a vivid, surreal universe. “Time-lapse is the art of compressing time,” Seto explains. “It allows us to see the imperceptible changes that happen slowly in nature. Meanwhile, slow motion allows us to break down rapid movements, letting us witness transformations that would otherwise go unnoticed.”

A Story of Resilience and Hope

Though the protagonists are tiny seeds, the themes are deeply human. Dandelion’s Odyssey reflects the universal struggle for survival and a longing for belonging. As the seeds traverse strange new worlds, they echo the same hopes, fears, and resilience found in our own lives. Their silent journey, told entirely without dialogue, uses only imagery, rhythm, and music to communicate, creating a uniquely emotional viewing experience.

A Visual and Auditory Feast

Thanks to production designer Nils Dupré, each frame is meticulously crafted—from the vast emptiness of space to intricate alien ecosystems. The film zooms in on the smallest movements while capturing the epic scale of the cosmos. The result is a film that transforms the mundane into the magnificent.

International Collaboration, Universal Message

Produced by Miyu Productions and Ecce Films (France), in partnership with Umedia (Belgium), Arte France Cinema, CNRS, and Reepost, the film is a global collaboration filled with artistic passion and technical excellence. Gebeka Films will distribute in France, while Indie Sales handles worldwide distribution, aiming to bring this one-of-a-kind journey to audiences everywhere.

A Quiet, Poetic Triumph

In a genre often dominated by action and comedy, Dandelion’s Odyssey stands out with its meditative pacing and thought-provoking themes. The film invites viewers to slow down and absorb the poetry of its visuals, reflecting on nature, survival, and hope. It’s not just a film—it’s a feeling, a reflection on the resilience of life in the tiniest, most overlooked forms.

So, whether you’re a sci-fi enthusiast, a nature lover, or an animation aficionado, Dandelion’s Odyssey offers an unforgettable journey. Mark your calendars for its Cannes premiere—it’s one cinematic voyage you won’t want to miss.
