“This Dazzling Anime Heroine Just Hijacked the French Revolution – And We’re Obsessed!”
Grab your corsets and cue the harpsichord—Netflix is about to make history fabulously dramatic again. The legendary anime The Rose of Versailles is sashaying its way back onto our screens in a dazzling new film adaptation, and the trailer is already turning heads (and hearts). Premiering April 30, this MAPPA masterpiece promises romance, revolution, and enough eyeliner to make even Marie Antoinette swoon.

My Image

A Legendary Tale Blooms Again
Originally penned by Riyoko Ikeda back in the flower-powered ’70s, The Rose of Versailles is one of those rare stories that defies time, genre, and, quite frankly, logic (in the best possible way). Think: sweeping 18th-century gowns, forbidden love, sword fights, existential identity crises, and more powdered faces than a Versailles ballroom. What’s not to love?
The film’s heroine, Oscar François de Jarjayes, is a commander of the Royal Guard, born a woman but raised as a man by her ambitious father. She’s a fierce swordswoman with a heart as tender as freshly baked brioche. Oscar’s journey of self-discovery unfolds amidst the backdrop of the French Revolution, and trust us—it’s anything but textbook history. She’s a warrior, a protector, a romantic, and a rebel all in one gorgeously androgynous package.
Meet the Team Behind the Magic
Studio MAPPA—yep, the same crew behind Chainsaw Man and the upcoming Ranma 1/2 reboot—has taken the reins for this glittering retelling. Directed by Ai Yoshimura (My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU, Dance with Devils Fortuna) and scripted by Tomoko Konparu (Nana, Blue Spring Ride), this duo is well-versed in stirring up emotional storms and teen angst (just with more aristocratic flair this time).
Character designs are handled by the ever-talented Mariko Oka, while the musical score comes from the powerhouse trio of Hiroyuki Sawano, Kohta Yamamoto, and, well, Hiroyuki Sawano again (because one Sawano just isn’t enough). Ayaka’s sweeping theme song “Versailles” adds the final golden flourish to an already decadent production.
The Cast is as Star-Studded as the French Sky
Voice acting royalty lends their talents to bring this royal court to life. English dub fans will hear Caitlin Glass, Megan Shipman, Karen Strassman, and J. Michael Tatum, among others, breathing new life into these iconic characters. Whether you’re team Oscar, team André, or just here for the Revolution, the performances are sure to tug at your tricolored heartstrings.
Roses, Revolutions, and a Bit of Rebellion
This isn’t just an anime—it’s a love letter to the power of choosing your own destiny. Oscar is more than a swashbuckling beauty; she’s a symbol of resistance in a world that loves putting people into boxes. Gender norms? Sliced through. Class hierarchies? Challenged with style. Emotional complexity? Served in silver chalices.
With Netflix bringing this timeless story to a global audience (again), a whole new generation is about to meet the characters who helped define shojo storytelling as we know it. Expect duels, drama, and maybe a few tears—though we won’t judge if you pretend it’s just your allergies acting up.
Final Thoughts: Vive la Revolution… and Anime!
Whether you’re a longtime fan of the original 1979 anime, a manga devotee, or simply curious why everyone’s suddenly crying over a French guard with fabulous hair, The Rose of Versailles is a must-watch. It’s poignant, it’s passionate, and it’s proof that anime can be both historic and heart-stopping.
So mark your calendars, polish your epaulettes, and get ready to swoon—The Rose of Versailles premieres April 30 on Netflix, and it’s coming for your heart (and possibly your guillotine).
