The global VFX and animation powerhouse Technicolor Group has been dismantled in a series of high-stakes acquisition deals following its financial collapse last month. Now, a significant decision from the Paris Commercial Court has paved the way for several of these buyouts, marking a turning point for the company’s embattled French subsidiaries.
A Lifeline for Technicolor’s Workforce
The court’s ruling aims to preserve 220 jobs out of the approximately 500 at risk in France due to Technicolor’s shutdown. At its peak, the Group’s studios provided employment for an estimated 5,000 professionals worldwide. However, its abrupt downfall sent shockwaves through the industry, with administrators describing the collapse as “extremely brutal on a global scale”—further complicated by varying insolvency regulations across different countries.
As a result, Technicolor’s studios in France and the U.K. entered administration and receivership, while operations in the U.S., Canada, and India were forced to shutter completely.
Who’s Acquiring What?
The court-approved deals signal a reshuffling of key assets within the VFX and animation space, with established players stepping in to revive and reposition Technicolor’s top-tier studios:
🔹 Mikros Animation – Acquired by Rodeo FX, a renowned name in visual effects, set to integrate Mikros’ animation expertise into its growing global portfolio.
🔹 Technicolor Animation Production (TAP) – Acquired by Life Value, a content-focused holding company founded by Gilbert Saada and Boris Hertzog. Hertzog, a veteran of the animation industry, previously co-founded OuiDO Productions, which was acquired by Technicolor in 2015. Having served as CEO of TAP from 2013 to 2021, he later led Mikros Animation until 2023.
🔹 The Mill Paris – Acquired by TransPerfect, a leading language and AI solutions company, this deal brings together The Mill and MPC Advertising’s French operations under one roof.
🔹 Technicolor Games – Also acquired by TransPerfect, this acquisition strengthens the company’s foothold in gaming, visual effects, and digital content production.
