A Grand Victory for ‘Look Back’

Directed by the talented Kiyotaka Oshiyama, Look Back captivated audiences and judges alike, earning it the festival’s top honor. Known for his intricate storytelling and visually stunning animation, Oshiyama once again proved his creative prowess, securing a well-deserved win.

Award Winners That Stole the Show

The competition was fierce, with 12 exceptional films vying for top prizes. The full list of winners includes:

  • Grand Prix: Look Back – Dir. Kiyotaka Oshiyama
  • Kabuku Award: Memoir of a Snail – Dir. Adam Elliot
  • Evolve Award: Balentes – Dir. Giovanni Columbu
  • Honorable Mention: Papercuts: My Life as an Indie Animator – Dir. Eric Power

These films, each unique in style and storytelling, showcased the evolving landscape of animated cinema and reinforced NIAFF’s reputation as a hub for innovation in animation.

Honoring Industry Legends

Beyond the competition, the festival also hosted the Okawa Hiroshi Award and Fukiya Koji Awards, celebrating excellence in animation. This year’s honorees included:

  • Shin-ei Animation Co., Ltd. (Studio recognition)
  • Kiyotaka Oshiyama (Animator)
  • Toshiyuki Inoue (Animator)
  • Eriko Kimura (Sound Director)
  • Yuki Hayashi (Composer)

These distinguished figures have made monumental contributions to the world of animation, influencing both emerging and established artists globally.

What Makes NIAFF Special?

Unlike other animation festivals, NIAFF focuses exclusively on feature-length animation, making it a unique platform for long-form animated storytelling. Beyond the Feature Film Competition, the festival offered:

🎥 Retrospective Screenings – Celebrating classic and influential animated films.
🎤 Animation Camp & Forums – Providing networking opportunities and panel discussions with industry experts.
🚀 Talks & Workshops – Featuring insights from world-renowned animators and studios.

Held in Niigata—a city deeply rooted in Japan’s animation history—the festival pays homage to pioneers like Hiroshi Okawa, founder of Toei Animation and the producer of Japan’s first color feature-length animated movie, The Tale of the White Serpent (1958).

Looking Ahead

With its second edition successfully concluded, NIAFF is fast becoming a global powerhouse in the animation industry, setting the stage for future generations of visionary storytellers. As animation continues to push creative boundaries, festivals like NIAFF play a crucial role in shaping the future of the medium.

Animation fans and industry insiders alike eagerly anticipate NIAFF 2026, which promises to bring even more groundbreaking animated films to the world stage. Stay tuned for what’s next in the ever-evolving realm of animated storytelling!
