“Giancarlo Esposito Wants to Play This Iconic Batman Villain—And DC Fans Are Losing It!”

Now, he has his sights set on the DC Universe (DCU), and he’s made it clear which villain he wants to bring to life: the ice-cold, yet strangely sympathetic, Mr. Freeze.
The DCU Is Heating Up… So Why Not Cool It Down?
James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DCU is officially underway, kicking off with the animated Creature Commandos in December 2024. Gunn’s Superman is set to hit theaters in July 2025, with Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow following in 2026. While the slate is already filling up, there’s still plenty of room for some iconic Batman villains—and Esposito is ready to step in.
At FanExpo Cleveland, Esposito told IGN that he’d love to play Mr. Freeze, one of Batman’s most tragic foes. If that sounds familiar, it’s because the character has been crying out for a big-screen redemption ever since Arnold Schwarzenegger’s pun-heavy portrayal in 1997’s Batman & Robin left fans cold (and not in a good way).
The Icy Legacy of Mr. Freeze
Created by Dave Wood, Sheldon Moldoff, and Bob Kane, Mr. Freeze first appeared in Batman #121 in 1959 under the name Mr. Zero. However, it was Batman: The Animated Series that transformed him from a gimmicky ice-powered baddie into a deeply tragic figure. Dr. Victor Fries isn’t just a villain—he’s a desperate man trying to save his terminally ill wife, Nora, at any cost. His complex motivations have made him one of Batman’s more emotionally compelling enemies, which makes him a perfect fit for an actor of Esposito’s caliber.
Could Mr. Freeze Fit Into the DCU?
So, where could Esposito’s Mr. Freeze make his chilling debut? DCU’s Batman reboot, The Brave and the Bold, directed by Andy Muschietti, hasn’t announced a villain yet. Could Mr. Freeze be the big bad of the film? It’s certainly a possibility. And let’s not forget that the upcoming Clayface movie—written by Mike Flanagan and directed by James Watkins—proves that even unexpected villains can get their time in the spotlight.
James Gunn has already shown he’s open to fresh ideas. Clayface wasn’t part of his initial DCU roadmap, yet here we are. That means a well-pitched Mr. Freeze movie could still happen. And if there’s anyone who could turn Victor Fries into a scene-stealing, emotionally gripping antagonist, it’s Giancarlo Esposito.
A Role Worth Freezing For
With Esposito’s commanding presence and ability to bring depth to every character he plays, his version of Mr. Freeze could be a game-changer for the DCU.
