“Amanda Seyfried Turned Down Gamora—And Thought Guardians of the Galaxy Would Flop!”

It’s not every day that an actor turns down a Marvel role—especially one that goes on to be a franchise favorite. But Amanda Seyfried did just that when she passed on playing Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy. Now, years later, she’s opening up about why she walked away from the opportunity and how she thought the film would flop. Spoiler alert: She was way off.

Seyfried Thought Guardians Would Bomb

In a candid chat on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Seyfried revealed her hesitation about signing on for a big-budget, effects-heavy superhero film. “I definitely got the offer for it and I mulled over it for a couple of days,” she shared. But ultimately, she had some serious reservations—one of which was the intense makeup process. “I was really scared of the idea of being stuck and painted a different color… I didn’t want to live in London for six months out of the year.” Fair point—who wouldn’t think twice about spending hours in a makeup chair turning into a green-skinned warrior?

However, it wasn’t just the paint job that held her back. Seyfried admitted she was skeptical about the movie’s potential success. “I thought that because this was about a talking tree and a talking raccoon that it would be Marvel’s first bomb and me and Chris Pratt would never work again.” Yikes. Considering Guardians of the Galaxy went on to rake in over $772 million at the global box office and spawn multiple sequels, that prediction aged like milk.

Choosing A Million Ways to Die in the West Instead

At the time, Seyfried chose to star in Seth MacFarlane’s A Million Ways to Die in the West instead. The comedy, which had a stacked cast including Charlize Theron and Liam Neeson, seemed like a safer bet. But, unfortunately, it wasn’t exactly a box-office juggernaut, receiving mixed reviews and failing to make a lasting impact. Meanwhile, Gamora became a beloved MCU staple, played by Zoë Saldaña.

No Regrets (Well, Maybe Just a Little)

Despite missing out on the role, Seyfried doesn’t dwell on the what-ifs. “I had done some green screen stuff and it wasn’t my cup of tea then… I made that decision for myself. It was good for me then and it was good for me now.” Still, she acknowledged that it was a critical moment in her career, and she wasn’t willing to take a gamble on something that could have backfired.

As for Gamora’s future, Zoë Saldaña has made it clear she’s stepping away from the role, leaving the door open for a potential recast. “I hope a woman of color or a woman with special needs can take on the role next,” Saldaña said in a recent interview with Variety.

The Marvel What-Ifs

Turning down a major franchise role is always a gamble. Just ask Matt Damon, who passed on playing Jake Sully in Avatar (and later found out he missed out on a huge payday). Or Emily Blunt, who was originally cast as Black Widow before Scarlett Johansson took over. Hollywood is full of these near-misses, and Seyfried’s Gamora could have been another universe’s reality.

Still, Seyfried has had an impressive career, earning acclaim in Mank, The Dropout, and beyond. Would she ever consider joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe in another role? That remains to be seen—but if she does, we’re guessing she’d think twice before doubting Marvel’s ability to turn talking trees into box-office gold.
