Annecy 2025: 35 Mind-Blowing Animated Shorts That Will Leave You Speechless!

The Annecy International Animation Film Festival, the world’s premier event for animated storytelling, is back with a dazzling lineup for its 2025 edition. With over 3,900 submissions from across 100 countries, the festival’s selection committee has meticulously handpicked 35 outstanding short films for its Official Competition. Set to take place from June 8-14, Annecy 2025 promises a feast of creativity, innovation, and boundary-pushing animation.

A Rollercoaster of Animated Brilliance

Each year, Annecy showcases the best in animation, and 2025 is no exception. Festival director Marcel Jean, alongside a distinguished selection committee, has curated a diverse mix of artistic expressions, storytelling techniques, and thought-provoking themes. From poetic narratives to experimental visions, the competition celebrates the limitless potential of animation.

Official Shorts Competition Highlights:

  • “9 Million Colors” (Bára Anna Stejskalová, Czech Republic) – A visually stunning exploration of the color spectrum.
  • “At Night” (Pooya Afzali, Iran) – A hauntingly beautiful tale that delves into the mystery of the dark.
  • “Bread Will Walk” (Alex Boya, Canada) – A whimsical yet thought-provoking allegory on life and sustenance.
  • “La Vie Avec un Idiot” (Theodore Ushev, Alexandra Ushev, France) – A darkly comedic take on cohabitation and human eccentricity.
  • “Shadows” (Rand Beiruty, France, Jordan) – A mesmerizing blend of traditional and modern animation techniques.

With these and 30 more stellar shorts, the Official Competition promises to be a thrilling showcase of animation’s finest talent.

Beyond the Official Competition: Off-Limits, Perspectives & Young Audiences

Annecy is not just about competition; it’s a celebration of all things animation. Alongside the main selection, the festival also features categories that push creative boundaries and highlight emerging voices:

  • Off-Limits: Nine experimental films, including “Capriccio” (Hungary) and “Firewalk” (Finland), explore unconventional narratives and artistic techniques.
  • Perspectives: This category provides a platform for diverse global voices. Standout films include “Blinded by the Light” (Ghana) and “Snake Soup” (Armenia).
  • Young Audiences: A delightful selection of 10 films catering to younger viewers, featuring “Snow Bear” (USA) and “The Carp and the Child” (Belgium, France).

A Glimpse Into the Future of Animation

Annecy isn’t just a festival; it’s a barometer for the animation industry. Winning at Annecy is often a stepping stone to even greater recognition, with the top short automatically earning a spot on the Academy Awards shortlist. As industry leaders and enthusiasts flock to this festival, it serves as a launchpad for groundbreaking projects and emerging artists.

For animation lovers, Annecy 2025 is the place to be. Whether you’re captivated by the artistry of hand-drawn animation, intrigued by experimental storytelling, or looking for heartwarming narratives, this festival promises an experience like no other.
