Ramy Youssef, Pam Brady, and Mona Chalabi Discuss Creating Prime Video’s #1 Happy Family USA

Prime Video’s latest animated series, #1 Happy Family USA, brings humor, heart, and a powerful reflection of Arab-American life in early 2000s America. Created by actor-writer-director Ramy Youssef alongside co-creator Pam Brady (South Park, Lady Dynamite) and executive producer/writer Mona Chalabi, the series mixes sharp satire with heartfelt storytelling to show what life was like for an Arab-American family navigating a post-9/11 world.

A Different Kind of 2001 Story
Set in the aftermath of 9/11, #1 Happy Family USA dives into the complicated experience of Arab-American families dealing with surveillance, racism, and identity, all through the unique lens of animation.
“Maybe it started as a time capsule,” Youssef says, “but now it feels very much like today, just in terms of a family dealing with the surveillance state.”
Youssef, known for his acclaimed shows Ramy and Mo, grew up loving animated political satire like South Park and admired Chalabi’s work in visual journalism. Their collaboration brings together humor, critical observation, and rich visual storytelling.

Crafting a Distinct Visual Style
Youssef and Chalabi were determined to make the series look like it could have aired in the early 2000s.
The team intentionally downgraded their tech, using older computers and software to achieve a handmade, slightly gritty animation style.
Animation was handled by Animasia in Malaysia, giving the show a fresh non-American lens on American culture of the time.
“They brought this unique, handmade quality to the animation,” says Brady. “It was even cooler to see our storyboards interpreted by a Malaysian team.”

Building a Family with Heart
The creative team emphasized making viewers care deeply about the characters:

Youssef voices both the father and the young son, tapping into old childhood home videos to capture the authentic voice of the boy.

Chalabi worked closely with the character designers to ensure code-switching — showing how characters present themselves differently at home versus outside.

The family home, mosque, and school backgrounds are packed with detailed, loving touches that set the show apart from other modern animated series.
“The family is the heart of it all,” says Chalabi. “Even the villains, like the evil auntie, are drawn with love and understanding.”

A Show That’s Funny, Honest — and Urgently Relevant
#1 Happy Family USA is able to use the freedom of animation to tackle issues like capitalism, surveillance, and xenophobia with sharp humor while maintaining emotional authenticity.
“There are things that would feel too dramatic or offensive in live-action, but in animation, you can go crazier and still show the heart,” Youssef explains.
The show’s first season builds toward a surprising transition, hinting that Season 2 will take the family — and viewers — into a new world entirely.

Why #1 Happy Family USA Matters:
At its core, this show isn’t just about Arab-American experiences — it’s about family, identity, and the universal struggle of trying to survive and thrive under pressure.
“It’s a show for everybody,” says Youssef. “And it shows what happens when a group of people are caught between the pressures of surveillance and capitalism.”
